Tensiyon sa South China Sea, kasama sa mga pinag-usapan nina Marcos at Biden

Nagkita at nagkausap sa unang pagkakataon sa New York sina Pangulong Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos at US President Joe Biden.

Nasa US si Marcos para sa working visit kung saan dumalo siya sa United Nations General Assembly.

Kabilang sa kanilang mga napag-usapan ang freedom of navigation at overflight sa South China Sea, sa harap ng hangarin ng China na kontrolin ang naturang bahagi ng karagatan.

"The leaders discussed the situation in the South China Sea and underscored their support for freedom of navigation and overflight and the peaceful resolution of disputes," ayon sa pahayag ng White House matapos ang pagpupulong nina Marcos at Biden.

Bukod sa usapin ng South China Sea, nais din ni Biden na talakayin kay Marcos ang tungkol sa COVID-19 at renewable energy. Pinasalamatan ng lider ng US si Marcos sa pagtutol umano nito sa ginagawa ng Russia sa Ukraine.

Inaakusahan ng United States ang China na nagpapasimula ng gulo laban sa mga bansang may inaangking teritoryo sa South China Sea, at sa iba pang bansa na dumadaan sa naturang karagatan.

“The role of the United States in maintaining the peace in our region is something that is much appreciated by all the countries in the region and the Philippines especially," ani Marcos.

Kilala ang Pilipinas na matagal nang kaalyado ng Amerika.

"We feel that we are especially fortunate because we have very strong foundation of a very long relationship and the strong relationships on various facets not only political, not only diplomatic, but also economic," ayon kay Marcos.

"We continue to look to the United States for that continuing partnership and the maintenance of peace in our region," dagdag niya.

Inihayag naman ng White House ang kahalagahan ng alyansa ng Amerika at Pilipinas.

"The leaders reflected on the importance of the US-Philippines alliance. President Biden reaffirmed the United States’ ironclad commitment to the defense of the Philippines," ayon sa White House.

Sa naturang pulong, pinasalamatan ni Marcos si Biden sa "massive help" ng Amerika sa Pilipinas sa pagharap sa COVID-19 pandemic, partikular na sa mga bakuna.

"We had the provision of up to 35 — almost 36 million doses of vaccines very early on, ahead of some of the other countries," ani Marcos. "And for that we are very, very grateful." -- with GMA News/Reuters
