Inihayag ni House Speaker Martin Romualdez ngayong Lunes na bababa ang presyo ng bigas sa P29 hanggang P34 ang bawat kilo ng bigas sa Agosto. Sa kasalukuyang, umaabot sa P50 per kilo pataas ang presyo ng commercial rice sa Metro Manila.
Ginawa ni Romualdez ang pahayag natapos siyang makipagpulong kay Philippine Rice Industry Stakeholders Movement (PRISM) founder at lead convenor Rowena Sadicon. Kasama rin ang co-founder na si Orly Manuntag, at tagapagsalita ng Grain Retailers Confederation of the Philippines (GRECON).
Nangako umano ang dalawang organisasyon na ibababa ang presyo ng bigas dahil na rin sa pagpapalabas ng Palasyo ng Executive Order 62 na magbabawas sa tariff rates sa imported rice sa 15% mula sa 35%.
Ayon kay Romualdez, sa July ay maglalaro sa P45 hanggang P46 per kilo ng well milled rice, at P47 hanggang P48 per kilo ang premium rice, bago maabot ang ideal price na P29 hanggang 34 per kilo sa Agosto.
“Here in Metro Manila, rest assured the reduced prices will be on the ground at P45 range. We are committed to this, and they [retailers, wholesalers, importers, rice millers] are committed to pass on savings [out of reduced rice prices] to consumers,” ang lider ng Kamara de Representantes.
“Then you add our long term programs with the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), we are anticipating that NIA could bring to the table P29 per kilo by August. We have budget allocation [towards reaching this amount], government plans are being implemented. Hindi ito drawing,” pagtiyak ni Romualdez.
Umapela naman si Sadicon na huwag samantalahin ng rice importing countries ang ibinabang rice tariffs.
“Our commitment is that gusto namin makiisa and at the same time, we also appeal to exporting countries not the take advantage of the price para hindi po masayang,” ani Sadicon.
Kasabay nito, tiniyak ni Romualdez at House appropriations panel chairperson Zaldy Co, sa mga lokal na magsasaka ang patuloy na suporta ng gobyerno para mataas ang kanilang ani.
Ayon kay Co, mayroong P22-bilyon na pondo para ipangtulong sa mga magsasaka ang Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) na nakapaloob sa Rice Tariffication law.
"We always take care of our farmers," sabi ni Romualdez.
Sinabi naman ni acting Administrator Larry Lacson ng National Food Authority (NFA), na patuloy na kumukuha ang NFA ng palay ng mga magsasaka sa mataas na presyo na P29 hanggang P31 per kilo para matulungan sila sa posibleng epekto ng may pinamurang imported na bigas. — mula sa ulat ni Llanesca T.
