Inihayag ng Bureau of Customs (BOC) nitong Martes na tinatayang P17 milyon halaga ng mga ipinuslit na dilaw na sibuyas na galing sa China ang kanilang nasabat at itinago sa mga damit na "ukay-ukay."
Ayon sa BOC, nakita ang mga sibuyas sa tatlong container na idineklarang mga damit at mga gamit sa bahay ang laman na nagmula sa China.
Pero nang magsagawa ng masusing physical examination ang mga container noong December 23, dito na nadiskubre ang mga sibuyas, kabilang ang nasa P2 milyon halaga ng ukay-ukay
“The bureau has, so far, examined, detained, and seized hundreds of millions worth of shipments that contain agricultural products this month alone. If they think they can use the ukay-ukay to hide the onions, they are mistaken,” ayon kay Customs Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz
“We swore to protect the country’s borders from this kind of illegal activities. But much more than that, we are also trying to protect our people, many of whom are deeply affected—and have been crying out—against the prices of the most basic of our food products,” patuloy niya.
