Nagbabala ang ilang duktor sa masamang epekto sa kalusugan ng tao ang pagkalantad sa ultraviolet light na ginagamit na pang-disinfect sa COVID-19.

Sa ulat ni Ivan Mayrina sa GMA News “24 Oras” nitong Martes, sinabi ni Dr. Jay Racoma, ophthalmologist, na ang sobrang pagkakalantad sa UVC radiation ay maaaring magdulot sa mata ng photokeratitis o photoconjunctivitis.

“The outer parts of the eyes, the cornea and the conjunctiva so same way that our body is covered by skin, the conjunctiva is the covering of the eye and the cornea is the outer part of the eye so sila ‘yong unang tatamaan if ever by UVC radiation,”paliwanag ni  Racoma.

“If there’s prolonged exposure to the eyes, which will result in photokeratitis and this will result in pain, irritation, redness swelling, and temporary blurring,” patuloy niya.

Inihayag naman ng Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology at Philippine Cornea Society, na ang madalas na pagkakalantad ng mata sa naturang radiation at maaaring magdulot ng catarata.

Kamakailan lang, ilang mamamahayag sa Baguio City ang nagkaproblema sa mata nang malantad sila sa UV-C disinfecting robot na gagamitin ng lungsod na panlaban sa COVID-19.

"Hindi ko na maidilat. 'Pag dinidilat ko siya nakikita ko puro puti lang. Hinilamusan ko nang hinilamusan ng tubig, wala pa rin talaga," ayon sa isang kasapi ng media.

"May something na para siyang mabuhangin sa loob na ayaw dumilat, and then at the same time, meron siyang mga parang bubog sa mata," sabi ng isa pang mamamahayag.

Humingi na ng paumanhin sa mga mamamahayag ang namamahala sa naturang proyekto ng lokal na pamahalaan.

"We sincerely thought we had exercised enough precautions, when the press asked to switch the robot on, but it turns out we didn't. We extend our apologies to the members of the press who were affected, and are updating our protocols to make sure that this does not happen again, moving forward," sabi ni Robotics Activations chief of business development Camille Anton.

"The discomfort from the UV exposure is real, but is supposed to be temporary, by all accounts. We remain in contact with those affected to ensure that this is the case," dagdag niya.

Samantalang bukod sa pinsala sa mata, sinabi naman ni Dr. Jean Marquez, dermatologist, na may epekto rin sa balat ang UV lights.

“It can actually cause burns. It can cause irritation. Sometimes when you get hit by an ultraviolet, the inflammation is just underneath, it does not manifest kaagad unless na lagi sigurong na-e-expose, doon lang may potential risk din na magkaroon ng skin cancer and aging,” saad niya.

Una nang sinabi ng Department of Health na walang matibay na patunay na kayang patayin ng UV light disinfectant ang SARS-CoV-2, ang virus na dahilan COVID-19.

Maging ang Food and Drug Administration of the Philippines ay nagpahayag na hindi nila ikinukonsidera ang UV light disinfectant bilang medical equipment.--FRJ, GMA News
