Shane Enrico Vasquez, an 11-year-old from Dagupan, is overjoyed after winning the gold medal at the World Wado-Karatedo Championship held in Japan on Monday, August 26, 2024.

Vasquez attributed his success to his determination to win the competition and proudly raise the Philippine flag.

Competing against strong contenders from countries like the USA and Japan, Vasquez stood his ground and emerged victorious.

"Masaya na nakuha ko ang gintong medal, kinabahan ako kasi maraming malakas na kalaban, pero laban lang po," Vasquez said.

Vasquez's parents, who have been training him since he started practicing karatedo at the age of five, could not contain their joy.

Alejandro Vasquez, his father, recalled the moment of victory.

"Noong nakuha niya yung gold, nagulat kaming lahat, hindi kami nakapagsalita kasi talagang magaling din ang Japan," he said.

Vasquez began competing in karatedo tournaments in the Philippines at the age of six and started participating in international competitions at eight.

He has already won gold, silver, and bronze medals in tournaments held in Malaysia, Thailand, and Florida, USA.

Vasquez is set to return to the Philippines on August 31, where he will begin preparing for his next challenge in the Batang Pinoy competition.
