With the rise in popularity of gymnastics and weightlifting in the Philippines with the Olympic victories of Carlos Yulo and Hidilyn Diaz, the Philippines' oldest collegiate league isn't closing its doors to the prospect of adding the sports in future seasons.

In a report by Bea Micaller of GMA Integrated News, NCAA Season 100 management committee Chairman Hercules Callanta said it is possible for gymnastics and weightlifting to be added to the events in the NCAA in the future.

Callanta is a former weightlifter himself.

"We are not closing the door on adding those events, especially because I was a former weightlifter. I was a weightlifter for the University of the Philippines and the Philippine team," Callanta said.

"But the practical side of things is gymnastics and weightlifting, the equipment requirements are quite expensive so maybe in the near future. [Ngayon], hindi pa muna," he added.

Yulo won two gold medals in the Paris 2024 Olympics in the floor exercise and vault events in Paris - the Philippines' best-ever finish in the Summer Games.

In the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Hidilyn Diaz gave the Philippines its very first gold medal.

In Paris, three more athletes lifted the weights for the Philippines: Elreen Ando who finished sixth in her event, and Vanessa Sarno and John Ceniza who missed out on podium finishes.

Currently, the main events in the NCAA include men's basketball, men's and women's volleyball, athletics, men's football, beach volleyball, tennis, taekwondo, and cheerleading.

In a previous interview, Callanta already bared their plan of including several 'sports of interest' like arnis, esports, and obstacle sports.
