For his two gold medals in the Paris Olympics, 'golden boy' Carlos Yulo is set to be rewarded with a cash incentive amounting to P6 million by the House of Representatives, Speaker Martin Romualdez confirmed on Monday.

According to a report by GMA Integrated News, the amount of the reward is consistent with the incentive scheme pledged by the House: P3 million for gold, P2 million for silver, and P1 million for bronze.

Yulo, 24, bagged two gold medals in men’s artistic gymnastics to conclude a historic Olympic stint in Paris.

Yulo’s first gold medal was in floor exercise, which he won on Saturday (3 August). In doing so, the bemedalled Filipino gymnast secured the country’s only second gold in Olympic history, and became the first ever male athlete from the Philippines to claim the top spot in an Olympic event.

As if one historic feat were not enough, the 24-year-old Manila-born athlete took home another gold medal after an impressive showcase in the vault event a day later.

An unprecedented accomplishment, Yulo’s second gold has made him the first and only Filipino to be a two-time Olympic champion.

“It’s important to support and inspire all our athletes and recognise all their achievements. We are very proud of our medalists and we are looking forward to more medals. We are very inspired as a nation,” said House Speaker Martin Romualdez in an interview with the press including GMA Integrated News’ Tina Panganiban-Perez.

“We want to make sure that they are equally inspired, acknowledged, and rewarded for their achievements,” he added.
