Joanie Delgaco, a rower from Iriga City, has advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s single sculls event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Delgaco secured her place after finishing first in the repechage round, a secondary opportunity for athletes who did not automatically advance in the initial heats.
Despite missing an automatic quarterfinal spot, Delgaco made the most of her chance in the wildcard round, demonstrating her determination to continue her quest for an Olympic medal.
Her father, Bernardo Delgaco, has been an unwavering supporter.
"Maogmahon na maray, lalo na kan su nahiling ko nang si aki ko — syempre halos dae na ako mapakali, itong lamesa ko pig-aarog ko na kaan. Nyako, 'Nini, labu-labuhon mo na an ta pagkakataon mo na man,'” he said.
Bernardo’s simple yet heartfelt message to Joanie is to believe in herself and give everything for the Philippines.
The Delgaco family isn’t the only one proud of Joanie’s achievements. Residents of Iriga City are also cheering her on.
"Malaking orgulyo nin taga Iriga na nagkaigwa kita nin Olympian na purong taga Iriga, ta bihira mangyari iyan," Marciano Rambuyong Jr., a resident, said.
"Good luck po saiya — sana manalo ka po — ilaban mo [ang watawat ng Pilipinas],” Rey Camila, another resident, added.
