In welcoming the New Year, the Ilocos Sur Provincial Police (PNP) documented eight cases of injuries caused by fireworks, with the youngest victim being an eight-year-old.
All cases involved the use of illegal firecrackers.
Despite these cases, PCOL. Darnell Dulnuan, the Acting Provincial Director of Ilocos Sur PPO, said the New Year celebration was relatively peaceful.
"So far, masasabi natin relatively peaceful yung nangyaring salubong kagabi," he said on January 1.
However, he emphasized the need to reduce or eliminate the use of illegal fireworks, suggesting the exploration of alternative ways to celebrate the New Year.
"Dapat siguro is mabawasan o matigilan na natin [ang pagpaputok] o [mas maganda] kung makakahanap tayo ng mga alternatibong pamamaraan ng pag-celebrate ng new year," Dulnuan said.
There were no reported victims of stray bullets or illegal discharge of firearms in the province.
