Two brothers died in a fire that struck their house at past 2 a.m. of December 26, 2023 in Poblacion, Municipality of Sibonga, Cebu Province.
The fatalities were identified as siblings Fernando Geronimo, Jr., 26 years old, and Kyle Geronimo, 25 years old.
The two were trapped reportedly inside their room where the fire was believed to have started.
The siblings were described to be both intellectually deficient.
The Sibonga Fire Station received the alarm at 2:20 a.m. and declared a fire-out at 2:50 a.m.
The Sibonga Municipal Police Station conducted a separate investigation and looked into the possibility that a lit, unattended candle may have caused the fire.
Another possible reason is the cellphone of one of the victims used as a flashlight based on the statement of Lilibeth Geronimo, the mother.
She said they did not use candle light to illumine the house during a brownout.
Their uncle, Abraham Cañazares, has sustained burns on his back after he attempted to pry open the room to save his nephews.
The police recommended an autopsy on the bodies but their mother declined.
Damages were estimated at P267,000.
