The local government of Mercedes, Camarines Norte has declared a state of calamity following weeks of rain due to effects of the shear line.
For one, the continuous downpour disrupted the livelihood of fishermen who were unable to venture out to sea for several weeks.
The weather also affected those who make dried fish or 'tuyo’ for a living.
"Mayo, tios pag dae nakakatuyo... Ini lang talaga ang ano mi [hanapbuhay]." Agnes Pante, a tuyo vendor, said.
The declaration enabled the LGU to release calamity funds to facilitate the provision of aid and resources for those impacted by the prolonged inclement weather.
"Meron po kaming 30 percent na affected families or mga pamilyang naapektuhan at yung isa pong kategorya yung livelihood po nila, naapektuhan. ‘Yun po ang pinagbasehan namin para makapag-declare ng state of calamity," says Councilor Jude Hernandez, chairman of the Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.
The government has prepared food packs for distribution to the families affected.
In line with the declaration of a state of calamity, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has implemented a price freeze on basic necessities.
The declaration will remain in effect until weather conditions return to normal.
