Alert Level 1 is up indicating low-level unrest of Kanlaon volcano in Negros Island, according to an advisory dated December 7, 2023 released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology based on a 24-hour monitoring.
Entry into the four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone is prohibited, as well as the flying of any aircraft near the crater of the volcano.
The public is also warned of the possibility of phreatic explosion or the release of volcanic steam.
When water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by volcanic activity, it begins to boil; the steam causes an eruption.
Mount Kanlaon is one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, and is recorded as the most active volcano in Central Philippines, with small-to-moderate phreatic eruptions that lead to ashfalls.
