A dog named "Bamboo" in Guinobatan, Albay was injured brutally and was abandoned near a store in Barangay Minto with a mutilated leg.

Bamboo was taken promptly to a veterinary clinic and it was there that it was found that a dagger may have been used in the attack. Bamboo had to stay in the clinic for five days due to infections.

On November 29, 2023, Bamboo returned home.

The barangay believes that someone who lives near the area is responsible for the crime.

Plans are underway to install CCTV cameras in the area and deploy more barangay patrol personnel.

The dog’s owner, 'Rose', expressed disappointment over the absence of surveillance cameras in the barangay, which she said could have helped identify the culprit.

Walang gustong mag-witness kung sino 'yung nakakita o nakarinig," Rose said.

Barangay Captain Rio Riva said they will tackle the installation of CCTV cameras during their regular session in December.

'Yung iba na nag-aalaga ng aso naman, sana nakatali din iyong aso nila," he said.

Under the Animal Welfare Act, those found guilty of cruelty, torture, or maltreatment of pet animals can face imprisonment from a minimum of one month to two years, along with fines of up to P5,000.

Ednalyn Cristo, Head of Tabaco Animal Rescue and Adoption, stressed the importance of individual responsibility in reporting and intervening in such cases. She emphasized that videos and photos can serve as crucial evidence in holding those responsible accountable.

"Isipin lang po natin na we can always be rescuers ourselves.

Cristo also emphasized that the privilege of receiving love and care from humans comes with a responsibility to treat animals with the same compassion and respect.
