Traffic congestion has challenged motorists on the Maharlika Highway leading to Matnog Port in Sorsogon, with kilometer-long queues forming due to adverse weather conditions affecting maritime operations.
Officials at Matnog Port confirm a notable decrease in ferry services. The standard 20 daily trips between Matnog and Visayas have been reduced to 19 since November 18, 2023, a consequence of challenging sea conditions leading to delays in vessel returns.
Despite the backlog, Matnog Port has not canceled any scheduled ferry trips.
Authorities are urging understanding from travelers, emphasizing that passenger safety is the top priority in light of the difficult maritime conditions.
“Iyon ‘yung kadahilanan kaya nagkaroon tayo ng pagsisikip dito sa pantalan at merong mahabang pila ng mga sasakyan sa highway dahil nga doon sa pagbaba ng bilang ng biyahe ng mga barko natin," said Achilles Galindes, Acting Division Manager of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) at the Port of Matnog.
