The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) has announced a new wage order, which increases the minimum wage rate in Region 5. The decision, following consultations and public hearings across six provinces in the region, will take effect on December 1, 2023.

Region 5 is composed of the provinces of Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, and Masbate.

Maria Zeniada Campita, CESO III Regional Director of DOLE Bicol, explained, "One tranche. Kasi nung nakaraan, two tranches kasi medyo malaki, P55. Now, 'yung increase natin, moderate, medyo nasa high end, P30. One time increase. So, beginning December 1, the new wage rate for Region 5 is P395."

Under the new wage order, workers can expect a one-time increase of P30 pesos to bring the rate to P395.

While the adjustment falls short of the initial proposal, it signifies a moderate yet meaningful improvement for employees like Rustom Alviola, a pump attendant in San Roque, Iriga City.

Alviola, who has been serving as a pump attendant for over a decade, said, "Gusto ko na rin mag-ipon. Kaso hindi ko pa naisipan na mag-ipon ng pera kasi kinakapos pa din kahit wala pa akong pamilya o binubuhay na bata."

Even if the increase is only P30, Joelan Nacario, a welder with three children attending college and high school, believes it was still a huge help.

"Depende sa gastos sa sarong aldaw. Kung matipid ka, igwang maiipon. Pero pag dae talaga matipid, saraktohan sana. Dae pwede magtipid, mahalon ang barakalon," he said.

While the adjustment is a step forward, workers like Joelan and Rustom are optimistic that further improvements will follow to better sustain their individual needs and support their families.
