Graduation and recognition ceremonies at San Miguel Elementary School 1 in La Carlota City, Province of Negros Occidental are set on April 15, 2025. However, the ceremonies may be postponed.
Postponement has become an option because of Mount Kanlaon's restiveness that affected preparations done by teachers and students.
The cleanup alone to remove ashes is certain to take time, said Geneveve Pornales, a utility worker at the said school.
“Grabe talaga ma’am. Grabe ang abo, delikado sa mga bata. Bumabalik pa rin kasi,” Pornales said.
Elvera Montero, a teacher, said that there is more work to do after the ashfall and that postponement of the ceremonies has been considered.
“Ang dami pa naming gagawin. Tingnan mo ang stage, ang mga footwalk. Isa sa option na baka ipagpaliban muna,” Montero said.
They planned to make the program brief and simple, and to make the wearing of face mask mandatory.
In Barangay San Miguel, over 1,000 families affected by the Kanlaon eruption received relief goods and face masks from GMA Kapuso Foundation along with the 62nd Infantry Battalion.
“Maraming salamat sa GMA at sa GMA Kapuso Foundation. Kasama nyo ang Philippine Army. Malaking tulong ito upang maabot natin ang mga apektado ng pagputok ng Mount Kanlaon,” said Lt. Col. Evelio Ilanga, commanding officer of the 62nd Infantry Battalion.
Janet Bautista, one of the beneficiaries, said that the goods are a big help to them.
"Malaki ang aming pasasalamat. Malaking bagay ito sa amin,” Bautista said.
