A young monkey lost its foot when it reportedly got caught in a trap set up for wild chickens in Barangay Sicalao, Lasam, Cagayan.
It was reportedly the tight binding in the trap that severed the monkey’s foot.
An Aeta resident who removed the monkey from the trap reportedly attempted to sell it to households nearby but a wildlife volunteer intervened and rescued the animal, offering rice in exchange.
The monkey, identified as a Philippine long-tailed macaque, received first aid, vitamins, and treatment from wildlife rescuers. Once it recovers, it will be released back into the wild.
Authorities reminded the public that capturing wild animals for food or pets is illegal and urged residents to report similar incidents to wildlife rescue teams.
