Muslim communities in Cebu celebrated Eid’l Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, in two venues.
The United Muslim Community Association in Cebu in Barangay Pajac, Lapu-Lapu City gathered at the Hoops Dome on March 30, 2025 in their simultaneous celebration with Saudi Arabia, while other members of the community observed in line with the Bangsamoro celebration on March 31, 2025.
The celebration at the Hoops Dome that began at 7 a.m. on March 30, 2025 was attended by nearly P4,000 Maranao-speaking Muslims, along with their leaders in Lapu-Lapu City.
About 500 individuals who have embraced back Islam (balik-Islam) listened to the sermon, in Cebuano language, of an imam during the celebration in Barangay Pajac.
According to Hajji Muhammad Nor Pancho, one of Muslim leaders in Lapu-Lapu City, they have included in their prayers a peaceful and orderly midterm elections on May 12, 2025.
Lapu-Lapu City has about 20,000 Muslim residents.
Earlier, Noralyn Timan, a teacher, conducted a moonsighting at about 5 p.m. in the Municipality of Balamban. Teacher Noralyn and her companions were not able to spot the crescent moon because of thick clouds on March 29, 2025, but because there was already a sighting in Saudia Arabia, they proceeded with the celebration.
Meanwhile, members of Muslim communities from other parts of Cebu Island gathered at the Plaza Independencia in Cebu City morning on March 31, 2025 for the celebration.
According to a post of the Cebu City Public Information Office, the event "brought together worshippers for a special prayer service and festivities, reflecting unity and faith."
Eid’l Fitr, also known as the "Festival of Breaking the Fast," is one of the most significant religious celebrations for Muslims worldwide.
"The gathering highlighted Cebu’s diverse and inclusive culture, as the local Muslim community came together to pray, share meals, and strengthen bonds in observance of this sacred occasion," Cebu City PIO added.
