A former barangay chairman in the Municipality of Calatrava, Province of Negros Occidental was shot dead by two perpetrators while on her way to adjacent San Carlos City.
Amalia Dayanay, former chairman of Barangay Macasilao, was on board a passenger jeepney when she was shot in Barangay Patun-an, Calatrava on March 18, 2025.
According to the Calatrava Municipal Police, when the jeepney took a halt at a stoplight, one of two perpetrators first shot the victim but missed.
The other assailant got in the jeepney and shot her on the head.
The victim died on the spot.
Another passenger named “Jay,” 19 years old, sustained a wound on the left hand.
It was learned that the victim last served as "punong barangay" (barangay chairman) in 2007.
Land dispute is one of the motives being investigated by the authorities.
Police already have persons of interest in the incident.
“Isa sa ini-explore namin is land conflict. Isa sa tinitingnan natin na parang may grudge talaga sa kanya,” Major Wilfredo Benoman, chief of the Calatrava Municipal Police Station, said.
