A barangay chairman in Malapatan, Sarangani was arrested for allegedly shooting his stepdaughter to death and wounding his five-year-old niece.

The 49-year-old suspect is the incumbent chairman of Barangay Daan Suyan where his stepdaughter served as barangay secretary.

Based on investigation, the suspect’s stepdaughter was at the birthday celebration of one of the members of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) when the suspect arrived.

A few moments later, the suspect, believed to be under the influence of alcohol, shot the victim.

The suspect’s niece, who was also around at that time, was hit in the left hand.

The two victims were brought to the hospital, but the suspect’s stepdaughter died after a few hours due to several gunshot wounds.

The suspect’s niece, on the other hand, is recuperating, as of this writing.

Authorities are eyeing jealousy as motive behind the shooting.

“Hindi pa ma-establish kasi nung dumating yung kapitan doon, andun na yung barangay secretary niya, nakipag-inuman sa birthday ng isang CAFGU. Parang nagselos, pero di natin masabi, bilang stepdaughter or kung ano man,” Sarangani Police Provincial Office Director, Col. Deanry Francisco, said.

The suspect was arrested during hot pursuit operation.

He may face homicide charges and alleged violation of the election gun ban.

He is yet to issue a statement, as of this writing.
