Police and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) personnel have been stationed at both the old and new Urdaneta City Hall buildings to prevent Mayor Julio Parayno III and Vice Mayor Jimmy Parayno from entering, following the enforcement of their one year suspension.
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla issued a memorandum on March 13, directing DILG Region 1 Director Jonathan Leusen to enforce the suspension, which Malacañang ordered on January 3.
The 12-month suspension took effect on January 7, as stated in a DILG advisory released on January 31.
The suspension stemmed from a complaint filed by a former Liga ng mga Barangay president, citing grave misconduct and grave abuse of authority.
Reports reaching the DILG indicated that the suspended officials continued performing their duties despite the order, this caused Remulla to reinforce the directive that they must not enter the City Hall or its extension offices.
DILG’s Legal Affairs Division has clarified that the mayor and vice mayor no longer have authority to perform their official functions.
In their place, First Councilor Franco Del Prado has been appointed acting mayor, while Second Councilor Warren Andrada now serves as acting vice mayor.
The suspended officials are yet to release a statement as of this writing.
