Vice President Sara Duterte said the Philippine government has surrendered a Filipino citizen, her father former President Rodrigo Duterte, to foreign powers.

Sara Duterte issued the statement after the former president was taken into custody after he was served a warrant of arrest from the International Criminal Court in connection with alleged crimes against humanity.

She said her father was being forcibly taken to The Hague on Tuesday night.

The International Criminal Court's pre-trial chamber found reasonable grounds to believe that Duterte was "individually responsible for the crimes against humanity of murder" in connection with the killings blamed on his war on drugs.

"Today, our own government has surrendered a Filipino citizen—even a former President at that —to foreign powers. This is a blatant affront to our sovereignty and an insult to every Filipino who believes in our nation’s independence," Sara Duterte said.

"Worse, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is being denied his fundamental rights. Since he was taken this morning, he has not been brought before any competent judicial authority to assert his rights and to allow him to avail of reliefs provided by law," she added.

"As I write this, he is being forcibly taken to The Hague tonight. This is not justice—this is oppression and persecution," Sara Duterte said.

Duterte was placed under the custody of authorities after he arrived at the airport from Hong Kong and the warrant from the ICC was served.

The camps of Duterte and Senator Ronald Dela Rosa on Tuesday filed a petition asking the Supreme Court (SC) to direct the government to release the former president from detention.

“We are earnestly praying to the Honorable SC to grant us a TRO, restraining the Philippine government, the respondent, from cooperating with the ICC,” Atty. Israelito Torreon, their legal counsel, said in an interview.
