Authorities continue to assess the collapsed portion of the Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge in Isabela, as of this writing.
The bridge is a vital route linking Cabagan and Santa Maria to Enrile, Cagayan, and Tabuk City, Kalinga.
Four vehicles were damaged, and six people were injured in the incident, including a child now in critical condition at the Cagayan Valley Medical Center.
In an interview with GMA Integrated News, the Department of Public Works and Highways-Region 2 (DPWH-2) said the cause of the collapse remains unclear.
They are coordinating with the Bureau of Design and Bureau of Construction from the DPWH central office for further evaluation.
The bridge, spanning 990 meters with 12 arch bridges and nine spans of pre-stressed concrete girders, cost P1.22 billion since construction began in November 2014.
Retrofitting was completed on February 1, 2025.
DPWH officials suspect that an overloaded dump truck carrying 102 tons of stones contributed to the collapse.
Currently, only light vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles are allowed to pass through the area.
Engr. Mathias Malenab, Officer-in-Charge of DPWH-2, said detours are in place via the old overflow bridge.
"Naapektuhan [ang daloy ng trapiko], kita mo naman ngayon na instead of passing easily, nagdi-detour na sa old na overflow bridge… For the meantime, I [will] ask muna, [hihintayin] natin ‘yan kung ano maging result, [then] that will be the basis of action," Malenab said.
