A saltwater crocodile trapped in the waterways near an aqua farm in Barangay Kawas, Alabel, Sarangani was rescued on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12), members of the Sarangani Provincial Wildlife Quick Response Team (SPWQRT) responded and rescued the crocodile after it was sighted by a concerned citizen.
The crocodile named ‘Reden’ was found to be male measuring 7.5 feet in length. A DNA sample was collected to identify its origin.
A DENR-accredited rescue center in Davao will take custody of the reptile for further observation and monitoring.
“The rescued wildlife only proves that with help of the community we can ensure the safety of the saltwater crocodile. The Department will assure the public that we will intensify and closely observe and monitor this development, and inform the public that the DENR will continue its operation for possible sightings of the same species,” DENR-12 Regional Executive Director, Atty. Felix Alicer, said.
DENR-12 said sightings of the saltwater crocodile in the coastal areas of the province started in August to September 2024.
DENR-12 could not confirm yet if the crocodile rescued was the same crocodile spotted in Sarangani Bay in September 2024.
At least 23 reflector signs were then installed in areas where the species was sighted, including in Barangay Kawas, and information and education campaigns were conducted in 42 coastal communities.
“According to Biodiversity Management Bureau Technical Bulletin No.2020-02, breeding season inclusive of courtship, mating, egg laying to hatching in the Philippines generally occurs from November to August but may extend to September in the case of Southern Mindanao that is toward the dry months until the onset of wet season,” DENR-12 said.
“While SBPS has no documented and established crocodile populations, the SBPS Protected Area Management Office urges the public to remain vigilant and report any wildlife sightings/encounters to the SPWQRT,” DENR-12 added.
