Members of various sectors in Iloilo City gathered afternoon on February 25, 2025 for the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
In the Province of Aklan, a forum and freedom march in the Municipality of Kalibo were held.
In Bacolod City, a program was held at Freedom Park for the commemoration of the said bloodless revolution that took place from February 22, 1986 to February 25, 1986 which saw a series of popular demonstrations and civil resistance of the Filipino people against the dictatorship of former President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr.
People took to the streets and into the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA).
The EDSA People Power Revolution had overthrown Marcos, Sr. and gave way for the assumption into the office of the presidency of the widow Corazon Aquino.
Nearly four decades after, the memory of EDSA People Power is still fresh in a few people who witnessed one of the most significant events in Philippine political history.
Lorenzo Billones said he was 24 years old only when he witnessed EDSA People Power.
“Tinatawag nating positive response ng democracy. Yan ang standpoint ng People Power. Right now, I do not know kung ano na ang development ng People Power. Depende sa politika,” Billones said.
However, a few younger Filipinos have no idea about the EDSA People Power Revolution.
Ashley, a student, said that the topic has not been tackled yet in their lessons in Social Studies or History.
“Hindi pa, hindi pa tini-teach. Parang hindi naman namin pinag-aaralan yan,” Ashley said.
As for Marites Hatton, a History teacher of Barrio Obrero Elementary School in Iloilo City, she said she makes sure that her pupils have an idea about the said event in Philippine history.
“Yan ang isa nakakalungkot isipin na ang younger ones, they do not remember what is EDSA. They cannot even remember kung ano talaga ang nangyari. But for me, it is really important na malaman ng mga bata what really happened during EDSA People Power Revolution,” Hatton said.
