Reelectionist Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando Uy and his son, congressional aspirant Raineir Joaquin Uy, are facing a disqualification case before the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).
Former City Councilor and vice mayoral aspirant Zaldy Ocon filed the disqualification case against the two on February 17, 2025.
This is the second disqualification case against the younger Uy. The first was filed by the Comelec but the poll body eventually withdrew the complaint.
Like the first case, the basis for the second complaint is the alleged issuance of barangay certifications that caused the “unusual” influx in voter registrations in Barangay Carmen where the younger Uy served as chairman.
Ocon also wants the mayor disqualified for allegedly convincing voters to transfer registration to Barangay Carmen during a flag raising ceremony at the City Hall.
The older Uy is seeking his second term as mayor in the city in the 2025 midterm polls.
“Giabuso ni Kikang ang barangay certification nga gipirmahan niya bunga sa panawagan sa iyang amahan nga balhin mo sa Barangay Carmen. Joke ba gud na ngano gi-allow man nila ang tao mianha sa carmen arun magpa rehistro,” Ocon said.
The mayor’s camp has yet to receive a copy of the complaint but said the same is a diversionary tactic.
“Same ra man gihapon to gibasura sa Comelec. Mao na nga gihimo lang niya nga kataw-anan ang hisgutanan and murag pang-insult sa COMELEC nga mas kabalo pa hinuon siya compared sa COMELEC nga mismo ang COMELEC gibakwi nila ang ilang case gipasaka batok kang Kapitan Kikang,” Uy’s spokesperson, Janboy Actub, said.
The younger Uy has yet to issue a statement, as of this writing, but he claimed earlier that the cases against him are just political harassment.
