The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Central Office pushed through with the hearing on the proposed P15 minimum fare for traditional public utility jeepneys (PUJs) that was pending since 2023.
The hearing on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, tackled the petition of transport groups to raise the minimum fare for traditional PUJs from P13 to P15, citing the constant hike in the prices of goods.
According to LTFRB 6, the release of a decision from the Central Office is uncertain yet as the petition depends largely on the number of witnesses that the applicants can present, and that opposition is expected.
Minimum fare pegged at P13 is for the first four kilometers of the trip of traditional PUJs in Western Visayas.
LTFRB 6 added that petitions from other regions will be collated and studied by the Board before releasing a decision.
Several traditional PUJ drivers treat the hearing as a big help to push for the P15 minimum fare.
PUJ drivers said that with the relentless high fuel prices, there has never been enough money to bring home to their family.
Individuals who have opposed the petition pointed out that the burden of a fare hike will again be passed on to commuters, especially students.
