A 17-year-old high jump athlete passed out after he landed on the ground with his head and shoulders first during his event in the Palarong Panlalawigan 2025 at a school in Upi, Maguindanao del Norte.

In a video that went viral online, the athlete could be seen holding his head and walking around the landing pit before he eventually collapsed.

Organizers immediately administered first aid.

According to the athlete’s companion, the student may have been feeling the pressure since it was already his last chance to jump.

“Meron na lang siya isang chance na tumalon po, ang ginawa niya is inayos nya po yung landing area kung saan siya mag-land, after ‘nun, dahil na rin siguro sa pressure, pag-land po niya is nahimatay po siya,” the companion, Dexter Saliling, said.

The athlete regained consciousness after first aid was administered.

“After niyang nahimatay pumunta ang medic, then after pagdating doon, maya-maya, tumayo na rin po siya, bumalik na rin siya sa area,” Saliling added.

X-ray results showed no sign of fracture.

GMA Regional TV One Mindanao is reaching out to the organizers for a statement, as of this writing.
