Health officials are monitoring closely a sharp rise in Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) cases in Region 1, after 253 cases were recorded from January 1 to 18 this 2025, compared to only 41 cases recorded in the same period in 2024.

According to the Center for Health Development in Region 1 (CHD-1), the number of cases in the provinces are:

  • Pangasinan - 110 cases
  • La Union - 101 cases
  • Ilocos Norte - 29 cases
  • Ilocos Sur - 13 cases

Most of the infected patients are children aged one to four years old.

“Ang HFMD ay isang uri ng sakit na ang may dala nito ay isang virus. Nakikita ito sa ating respiratory organ katulad ng ilong at throat, ito ay naipapasa sa pamamagitan ng respiratory droplets,” Dr. Rheuel Bobis, spokesperson of CHD-1, said.

The rising cases have alarmed many parents, including Mary Joyce Bugayong from Dagupan City, who is taking extra precautions to protect her two children.

“Inaalagaan ko maige ang mga bata, hindi masyado pinapalabas para hindi mahawa sa mga sakit,” she said.

Health officials urge parents to seek medical attention immediately if their children show symptoms such as high fever and rashes.

With cases climbing, authorities emphasize the importance of hygiene and early detection to prevent further spread.
