Two people died while 20 others were injured after a modern jeepney lost its brakes and crashed into an oncoming tricycle before plummeting off the side of a bridge in Calumpit, Bulacan.
Residents rushed to rescue the passengers quickly, many of whom were students and bleeding from the impact.
The jeepney, after losing its brakes, reportedly swerved to avoid hitting vehicles ahead but struck the tricycle and fell off the bridge, which was about five feet high.
The tricycle driver and one of its passengers were confirmed dead in the accident.
At least 20 others, including the jeepney driver, were injured and rushed to the hospital.
PLT. Col. Jonathan Meru, head of the Calumpit Police, reminds drivers and motorist to check the status of their vehicles regularly.
"Kapag nagmamaneho po ng sasakyan, dapat i-check po nating mabuti kung safe po ‘yung sasakyan lalong-lalo na po kung pampasahero. Dapat lahat ng drivers, saulado ang BLOWBAGETS,"
BLOWBAGETS is a mnemonic used to remember the basic components of a vehicle's maintenance check:
- B - Brakes
- L - Lights
- O - Oil
- W - Water
- B - Battery
- A - Air (tires)
- G - Gas
- E - Engine
- T - Tires
- S - Suspension
It helps ensure all key areas of a vehicle are checked for safe operation.
