The ongoing dredging operation at the Pantal River in Dagupan City is facing challenges caused by low tide, which reportedly makes it difficult for machines to suction sand and debris efficiently.

“Kapag sobrang low tide, hindi makapag-prime ang ating mga equipment kaya talagang affected,” Azer Dawey, Project Engineer from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 1, said.

To cope, operations are scheduled typically in the afternoon when water levels rise.

As low tide periods are expected to extend in the coming weeks, adjustments will be made to operate during the night or early morning.

“Ang ginagawa namin, sini-set namin ng gabi or madaling araw. Ginawa na namin ito last year,” Dawey said.

The dredging project, part of the government’s flood mitigation program, helps deepen the river and reduces the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

Residents benefit from the sand and soil collected during operations.

“Malaking tulong talaga kasi ‘yung mga debris galing bundok diresto dito sa ilog, at least nada-draga,” Cristobal Gaspar, a resident, said.

DPWH assured that sufficient funds are allocated to sustain the dredging efforts.
