Colder weather brought by the northeast monsoon (Amihan) has caused a 10 percent drop in egg production in Mangaldan, Pangasinan but consumers are benefiting from slightly lower prices.

According to the Municipal Agriculture Office, the cold has affected the laying capacity of chickens.

“Itong malamig na panahon kasi hindi masyado nangingitlog ang mga manok,” municipal agriculturist Merle Cuison-Sali said.

Despite the decrease in local production, the supply of eggs remains steady due to shipments from other provinces.

The lower demand has led to a slight reduction in prices.

Vendors report a 10 to 20 centavo decrease per egg, with tray prices dropping by P3 to P5.

“’Yung maliliit nasa 10-20 cents ang bawas. Per tray natin may bawas din, nasa P200 na lang ngayon,” Aldrin Layam, an egg vendor, said.

Consumers, like Robert Espino, welcome the price drop.

“Malaking tipid kasi medyo marami kami mabibili,” he said.

At the Mangaldan Public Market, egg prices currently range from P5 to P8 per piece.

Officials expect the lower production trend to continue until February but assure residents that egg supply will remain sufficient.
