The price of sayote, or chayote, in Mangaldan, Pangasinan, has plummeted to as low as P10 from P50 per kilo due to oversupply.
According to the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG), the farm gate price of sayote has gone down to P3 per kilo with wholesale prices ranging from P5 to P6.
“P3 lang ang wholesale sa bagsakan, nasa P5 to P6 lang,” SINAG Chairman, Engr. Rosendo So said.
At the Mangaldan Public Market, vendors sell sayote for P12 to P20 per kilo with ample supply sourced from the Urdaneta City Bagsakan Market.
“Bumaba talaga ang presyo ngayon kasi wala nang mga okasyon... kaya 12 pesos na lang per kilo,” Eva Nudo, a vegetable vendor, said.
Prices of other vegetables have also gone down.
Tomatoes are now sold at P100 to P130, which was previously over P200 per kilo.
Meanwhile, carrots and potatoes are priced at P90 and P60 per kilo, respectively.
Shoppers like Andres Ico welcomed the lower prices.
“Para makatipid din talaga sa ngayon,” he said.
