The body of a passenger who jumped reportedly from a ship in the vicinity of the Camotes Group of Islands in Cebu was recovered.
The body of the 37-year-old male passenger was retrieved by personnel of Coast Guard Station Camotes in the waters of Barangay Consuelo, San Francisco town morning on January 9, 2025.
The man was found to be a resident of Hindang town in the Province of Leyte.
According to Coast Guard Camotes Station Commander, Lieutenant Jenna Diosa May Pagcaliwagan, in an interview with DYSS Super Radyo GMA, the station received at 3 a.m. a report from the skipper of a “Man Over Board (MOB)” 3.9 nautical miles from the seashore of San Francisco, Camotes Island.
The ship was sailing for Ormoc City, Leyte from Ouano Wharf in Mandaue City, Cebu.
Coast Guard Station Camotes responded immediately and deployed its Quick Response Team to conduct a Search and Rescue Operation, but was later postponed due to rough seas.
As soon as the operations resumed, the station received a report at 8:40 a.m. from its substation that a fishermen spotted a human body floating in the waters of Consuelo.
The Coast Guard responded to the report and coordinated with personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction And Management Office (MDRRMO) and San Francisco Police Station for the disposition of the retrieved body.
Lt. Pagcaliwagan said, as of posting time, that investigation on the incident is ongoing, while the ship captain was ordered to submit a marine protest on the incident at MARINA or Maritime Industry Authority.
