Rough seas and sudden rains have kept fishermen ashore in Labrador, Pangasinan and led to a rise in the prices of seafood in local markets.

Over the past days, strong waves and unpredictable weather have made fishing dangerous.

“Maalon pa po... dalawang araw tapos humina na naman…. walang nahuli, maalon po kasi, sir, kasi nag-lindol noon, lumaki ang alon,” Robert Patacsil, a fisherman, said.

With fewer fish caught, prices at the talipapa in Labrador have surged. Squid (pusit) and yellowfin tuna, which previously sold for P200 per kilo, now cost P350.

The price of blue marlin has increased by P150 per kilo, reaching P650. Even shrimp (hipon) is up by P50, now priced at P600 per kilo.

“Tumaas po dahil konti ang isda ngayon dahil sa maalon po,” Edna Janga, a fish vendor, said.

Despite the higher prices, buyers like Katrina Simeon remain understanding.

“Okay naman po, walang tayong magagawa,” she said.

Vendors noted that rising prices started in December 2024 and could climb further if bad weather continues.
