The number of firecracker Injuries in Region 1 has dropped by 16.7 percent.
Ilocos Region recorded 105 firecracker-related injuries from December 20, 2024 to January 2, 2025, marking a 16.7 percent decrease compared to the numbers in the same period last year.
However, the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) in Dagupan City alone still recorded 22 cases on New Year’s Day.
In the entire monitoring period, R1MC treated 30 firecracker-related injuries, with 15 patients suffering from eye injuries. Others sustained burns and lacerations.
"Mayroon tayong laceration na mga bata, karamihan eye injury," Dr. Camille Navarro, Assistant Manager for Operations and Emergency at R1MC, said.
Across the region, the majority of injuries involved "boga," with 31 cases, followed by "kwitis" (18 cases), "five-star" (11 cases), and "baby rocket" (4 cases).
Pangasinan reported the most number of injuries in the region, followed by La Union.
“Kung ikukumpara from last year sa pagsalubong natin sa Bagong Taon, nagkaroon tayo ng pagbaba na 16.7% na mas mababa this year,” Dr. Rheuel Bobis, spokesperson for the Center for Health Development (CHD) Region 1, said.
