A time-lapse footage released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) showed dark plumes on Mount Kanlaon between 7:41 a.m. to 7:51 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

The Local Government Units (LGUs) of La Carlota City, La Castellana, and Moises Padilla in the Province of Negros Occidental have suspended classes from January 2 to 3 (Friday), 2025.

Schools in the said LGUs have shifted to modular learning.

The LGU of La Castellana has mulled on the resumption of face-to-face classes in places not affected directly by Kanlaon Volcano’s increased unrest.

“Mayroon kaming areas, nandito sa 12-kilometer onwards na (hindi) naman affected. So pwede silang convenient na mag-face to face,” John de Asis, La Castellana Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) head, said.

According to Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, he will coordinate with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on the possible return of evacuees to their homes. However, the governor admitted that with Kanlaon Volcano’s ongoing ash emission events, evacuees’ stay at centers may take a while.

“Very high. But we want to at least discuss it if it is possible to return. Just like what happened in June. They’re able to return. And it happened in December,” Governor Lacson said.

In the January 1, 2025 advisory of PHIVOLCS, Kanlaon Volcano recorded at least seven ash emission events and 28 volcanic earthquakes in 24 hours.

Alert Level 3 (increased unrest) prevails over Kanlaon Volcano since its latest phreatic eruption on December 9, 2024.
