The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) is looking into the person responsible for the fireworks display during the New Year revelry amid the city’s firecracker ban.

Police said the fireworks display may have happened in the Bangkal area and lasted for about a minute, according to some of those who witnessed.

The city has implemented the ban for over a decade.

Authorities will file a case once the person responsible for the fireworks display is identified.

GENERALLY PEACEFUL

Meanwhile, authorities said the New Year celebration was “generally peaceful” as no firecracker-related incident and indiscriminate firing cases were recorded.

“From November 28 up to January 1st, wala’y mga reported incidents sa atong mga stations,” DCPO Spokesperson, Captain Hazel Tuazon, said.

Hours before the new year, authorities also launched a series of operations against improvised firecrackers called “lantaka” and “boga.”

From December 16, 2024 to January 1, 2025, up to 132 “lantaka” were confiscated by authorities.

“Mga minors gyud kasagaran ang mga naggamit og lantaka mao nga ginaawhag gyud nato ang nga ginikanan nga basin karon, naa pa gihapon magpabuto og lantaka. Kung pwede, sila na lang mismo mag-confiscate sa lantaka sa ilang mga anak,” Tuazon added.
