At least 23 people, including a minor, were arrested for alleged illegal mining activities in Bunawan, Agusan del Sur.
Personnel of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Caraga (CIDG-13) and other police units conducted the operation based on a verified intelligence report about an alleged illegal mining operation in the area.
Seized during the operation were 35 sacks of gold-bearing rock materials, a hammer, an electric drill, a drilling rod, cellophane wrappers containing ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO), improvised explosives with ANFO, improvised electric detonators, and blasting caps.
The suspects were taken under police custody and are facing charges for alleged violation of the Philippine Mining Act.
The minor, on the other hand, was turned over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.
Authorities are looking into the financers and operators behind the illegal mining activities in the area.
“The CIDG remains steadfast in its mission to combat illegal mining and protect the nation’s natural heritage. We will continue to ensure that violators are held accountable. No holiday can hinder our dedication to bringing criminals to justice,” CIDG Director, Brigadier General Nicolas Torre III, said.
