Six drivers and conductors in La Union tested positive for illegal drug use during a surprise drug test conducted as part of “Oplan Ligtas Biyahe,” an initiative aimed at ensuring passenger safety during the busy holiday season.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Department of Health (DOH) conducted random inspections at bus terminals across Region 1.

Over 100 drivers and conductors underwent testing during the operation.

“Sumasailalim na sila ngayon sa rehab for six months,” LTO Region 1 Director Glorioso Daniel Martinez said.

The six individuals found positive for drugs are now undergoing rehabilitation.

In Dagupan City, all drivers and conductors tested negative for drugs.

“Lahat ng konduktor at driver natin, negative naman silang lahat,” Mel Lopez, Terminal Master of Victory Liner Bus Company, said.

PDEA’s K9 units also inspected buses and luggage for contraband.

Travelers said they support the security measures.

“Para sa proteksyon namin ito kaya dapat lang talaga,” Lornal Pascual, a traveler, said.

With the holiday rush expected to continue until January 3, 2025, authorities commit in maintaining rigorous inspections to prevent accidents and ensure secure travels.
