The controversial Ungka Flyover in Pavia town, Province of Iloilo was reopened to the public on full capacity.
The reopening on December 23, 2024 was done two days to the deadline set by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 6.
However, DPWH has prohibited to motorcycles, bicycles, trailer trucks, and tricycles.
Despite the prohibition, a 10-wheel truck traversed the flyover but hit the vertical clearance sign afternoon on December 24, 2024.
In a report on GMA Super Radyo Iloilo, the impact left a portion of the overhead clearance sign destroyed.
The reopening was undertaken despite ongoing rectification works on the flyover.
Two drivers, Genesis and Bobby, observed that the reopening has helped decongest traffic.
“Medyo maluwag-luwag na sa traffic kaysa nakaraan na matindi ang traffic,” Genesis said.
“Ang kita sa gatong, kulang pa (dati) sa kalahating oras na biyahe (sa Ungka). Sa ngayon okay na,” Bobby said.
However, another driver named “Tads” expressed anxiousness on the reopening as works on the railings of the flyover have not been completed yet.
“Konting pag-iingat. Kung driver ka, mag-ingat dahil ang railings ay hindi pa fully natapos,” Tads said.
A commuter named “Sheila” said that she experienced a smooth flow of vehicles after the reopening of the flyover.
“Nagulat ako dahil smooth ang flow at walang traffic. Dumating ako from Santa Barbara papunta dito 30 minutes lang,” Sheila said.
According to the DPWH, the public need not worry on the reopening despite ongoing works.
“It is our mission to help the motorists upang mabigyan sila ng safe and comfortable travel,” said Engr. Sanny Boy Oropel, DPWH 6 regional.
