As Filipinos prepare to indulge in Christmas feasts featuring lechon, rich dishes, and sweet desserts, health authorities remind the public to eat in moderation to avoid health risks such as Holiday Heart Syndrome.
The Center for Health Development (CHD) Region 1 warned that overindulging in salty or fatty foods, combined with excessive alcohol consumption, can trigger high blood pressure and arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm), increasing the risk of stroke.
Stress and lack of rest are also contributing factors.
Senior citizens and those with existing health conditions are advised to limit their intake of holiday treats during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In Mangaldan, Pangasinan, sisters Mercedez Abad and Myrna De Guzman are mindful of their health as they approach the festivities.
Authorities encourage families to include healthier options in their holiday menus to ensure a joyful and safe celebration.
