Firework-related injuries (FWRI) in the Ilocos Region reached 14 cases from December 21 to 23, 2024 marking a sharp 366 percent increase compared to the cases in the same period last year.
The Center for Health Development (CHD) Region 1 reported that Pangasinan recorded the most cases with 12 while La Union and Ilocos Sur each logged one.
The incidents involved various firecrackers, with “boga” being the leading cause (6 cases), followed by “Five Star” (3 cases), and others like “baby rocket” and “kwitis.”
“Patuloy tayong magbabantay at magmo-monitor sa ating kalagayan pagdating sa FWRI,” Dr. Rheuel Bobis, spokesperson for CHD Region 1, said.
The Department of Health (DOH) also confirmed 17 firecracker-related injuries nationwide as of December 23.
Campaigns urging a “no-fireworks” celebration continue, with support from locals like Carla Quinto.
“Ayaw namin magpaputok, mahirap [na], sumusunod kami sa batas,” Quinto said.
OTHER CONCERNS
Apart from firecracker injuries, health authorities are monitoring potential increases in vehicular accidents during the holiday season.
Dr. Joseph Fama of the Region 1 Medical Center reminded drivers.
“Kapag sinabing biyaheng healthy dapat safe ang pagda-drive at sundin ang limit ng speed ng sasakyan,” Fama said.
Authorities encourage residents to celebrate safely and avoid dangerous practices that may lead to accidents or injuries.
