A US Marine drowned while swimming in rough waters off Barangay Baruyen, Bangui, Ilocos Norte.

The incident happened afternoon on Friday, December 20, 2024.

The victim was identified as Corporal Edmond Zhu from New York, USA, who was based temporarily in Laoag City on a mission order.

Based on police investigation, Zhu was visiting the area with fellow military personnel, including members of the Philippine Navy, as part of a training exercise.

Despite warnings from both his companions and local residents about the dangerous currents and bad weather, Zhu decided to swim while his group was having lunch.

Moments later, his companions heard cries for help and rushed to his aid.

They found him struggling in the water and managed to pull him out after 15 minutes.

Resuscitation efforts were made. Zhu was rushed to the Bangui District Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
