Authorities across Northern Luzon are bracing for the potential impact of a tsunami, following nearly 50 earthquakes recorded off Santa Catalina, Ilocos Sur between December 17 and 20, 2024.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has issued directives to the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon for immediate preparation.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the tremors, ranging from magnitude 1.8 to 5.

While seismic activity has slowed in recent days, PHIVOLCS warned of possible stronger earthquakes and a potential tsunami.

In response, the Tsunami Incident Command System in Ilocos Region remains on standby.

OCD spokesperson Adreanne Pagsolingan assured that safety measures are ready.

“Naka-standby, ready po ‘yung possible na mga actions regarding po sa kung mangyari ang tsunami po ngayon. Ma-prepare, ma-ensure ang safety ng ating mga kababayan dito sa Region 1 po," Pagsolingan said.

In Dagupan City, beach cottage owners, such as Jose Cayabyab, are monitoring the situation actively.

“Tinitingnan namin ‘yung kalagayan ng dagat. Nagbi-base kami sa sinasabi ng maritime police. ‘Pag sinabi nilang evacuate, agad kaming nag-i-evacuate,” Cayabyab said.

Preparations are also underway in Cagayan, with OCD urging local governments and agencies to revisit contingency plans.

“Ipinapanawagan natin sa mga LGUs, member-agencies na palaging maging handa. I-revisit ang contingency plans natin," Pagsolingan said.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert and follow updates from authorities as precautionary measures continue across the region.

  • Identify if your area is at risk of tsunamis.
  • Know the nearest evacuation center and the safest routes to it.
  • Participate in community disaster drills.
  • Prepare a “go bag” with essential supplies for your family.
