Police seized 20 pieces of 'boga' or homemade cannons in separate operations in December ahead of Christmas.

The boga — made from large PVC pipes and fueled by denatured alcohol — creates loud explosive sounds when ignited.

Authorities have warned that the device is dangerous and can cause injuries to the user’s face or eyes.

“Dineclare na ng DOH (Department of Health) [na] ‘yung alkohol na ginagamit is poisonous,” Police Lt. Col. Roldan Cabatan, Chief of Mangaldan Police Station, said.

For two weeks, Mangaldan cops patrolled barangays to confiscate boga, which are often used by teenagers during the holidays.

“Hindi sila sigurado sa safety nila. Baka maabutan ang kanilang katawan,” Cabatan said.

Aside from safety concerns, boga also disturb communities with the loud noise.

The Mangaldan Police have also been cracking down on illegal motorcycle exhaust pipes.

Violators face fines of P1,000 to P2,000, with repeat offenders risking additional charges.

“Tototo naman, especially kung tulog ka, mabubulabog ka sa ingay ng mga tambutso na ‘to,” Cabatan said.

The police remind residents to celebrate safely and avoid illegal noisemakers during the holidays to ensure a peaceful and injury-free New Year.
