Up to 51 wild spiders, referred to by many locals as ‘damang,’ were rescued and were released back into their natural habitat at a forested area in Glan, Sarangani.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12), these spiders were rescued by the police during an anti-gambling operation in Barangay Ilaya.

The spiders rescued during the operation were turned over to the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO).

“Spiders, particularly those from the genus Neoscona, are integral to ecological balance as natural predators of insect pests, making them valuable in agriculture and forestry. They are also sensitive to environmental disturbances, making them reliable indicators of ecosystem health,” DENR-12 said.

“After confirming the spiders’ good health, they were released into a forested area in Glan,” DENR-12 added.

DENR-12 said the exploitation of spiders in “spider derbies,” where they are made to fight for entertainment, not only poses a threat to their population but is also prohibited under the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001 (RA 9147).

The law also prohibits the collection, trade, and harm of wildlife without proper permits.

“The DENR reminds the public of their duty to respect and protect wildlife, emphasizing the importance of preserving biodiversity for a sustainable future,” DENR-12 said.
