Heavy rainfall inundated areas of Capiz and Aklan provinces because of the shear line, a weather system that affected northern Panay Island.
In Roxas City, floodwaters reached knee-high, while in the town of Sapian, personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) conducted rescue operations of residents in low-lying areas.
Several vehicles were stranded on flooded roads in the Municipalities of Altavas and Balete in Aklan. In Kalibo town, major thoroughfares were also flooded, but the waters were reportedly quick to recede.
According to a report of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction andManagement Council (RDRRMC) VI, most affected by the floods were the towns of Altavas, Lezo, New Washington, and Tangalan in Aklan, as well as Ivisan town in Capiz.
Affected families reached 1,009. The situation launched preemptive evacuation procedures in certain areas.
“We are still expecting 1 (one) to 2 (two) bagyo na tatama sa ating bansa so we are still reminding our community, especially ang LGUs natin to really be vigilant,” RDRRMC 6 Director Raul Fernandez said.
According to state weather bureau PAGASA, a shear line affected Southern Luzon and dumped heavy rainfall in the northern portion of Western Visayas on November 30, 2024 to December 1, 2024.
A shear line is a weather condition wherein a cold front and a warm front meet and lead to cloud formation that eventually produce rainfall.
“Expect pa rin natin sa next following days possibly, mararamdaman ang ganitong weather system,” Jeff Maquiling, PAGASA weather forecaster, said.
