The Philippine eagle chick hatched at the National Bird Breeding Sanctuary (NBBS) in Davao City on November 11, 2024 has died, the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) said.
Based on the necropsy result, the 17-day-old eagle named Chick No.30 may have died of yolk sac retention (omphalitis) and its resulting complications.
PEF said the eagle displayed normal behavior and feeding patterns after it was born. On November 26, 2024, it began exhibiting respiratory problems, including labored breathing and sneezing.
Despite immediate interventions, proper care, and efforts to revive the eagle, its health continued to decline until it passed away on November 29.
“This heartbreaking loss is a solemn reminder of how delicate chick-rearing can be and how critically endangered species are particularly vulnerable,” PEF said.
“The Philippine Eagle Foundation assures its partners, supporters, and the public that it is already implementing measures based on these findings,” it added.
Chick No.30 was a product of artificial insemination from its parents “Pinpin” and “Sinag.”
