The price of watermelon in General Santos City has gone up reportedly due to the recent bad weather conditions.
The seedless watermelon at the Bagsakan Center in Barangay Bula is now sold at P45 per kilo. It was sold at P40 per kilo the previous month.
On the other hand, from P20 to P25 per kilo, regular watermelon is now sold at P30 per kilo.
A consumer, Jessica Supil, is concerned that the price will go up further during Christmas and New Year.
“Sobra sir, nabalaka gyud kay siyempre maghanda man gayud ta bisag ginagmay lang… unsaun man kay pag magmahal, maayo siguro kung magtipid na lang,” she said.
According to some vendors, the increase in the price of watermelon is due to recent bad weather.
“Naapektuhan gyud mi kay, ngano man, ang mga tanom man gud nila sa umahan (nangadaot)sa mga ulan ulan… Ang harvest nila gamay na lang kaya nagmahal ang watermelon,” a vendor, Ernesto Santiago, said.
Some planters also reportedly decided to divide the harvest so there will be supply for other areas.
“Ang harvest nila gamay na lang kaya nagmahal ang watermelon… Mga buyer man gud, magtapok, so nagapasalamat ang mga planter… ibahin-bahin na lang presyuhan nila para makabawi sa ilang kita,” a buyer from planters, Ernesto Santiago, said.
